Long Span
Using highest strength messenger for support, long spans up to approximately 1200 feet are achievable with spacer cable systems if appropriate sag space is available. Possible applications include crossings of lakes, rivers, highways, valleys and canyons. In this photo, a spacer cable system is being installed across a lake, and the span length is 1134 feet.
Tree Down
A falling tree has come to rest on the high strength messenger wire that supports the Hendrix Spacer Cable System. The tree branches are touching the phase conductors, but the circuit stays in service because the conductors are covered with three layers of polyethylene. The very small leakage currents that flow to ground through the tree branches will not operate the protective relay and open the circuit. Thus, the circuit stays in service while waiting for the tree removal crew to arrive, sometimes days or weeks later. A bare wire circuit would have experienced a costly outage that required immediate attention. Hendrix Spacer Cable Systems greatly improve circuit reliability.

Tree Down on Hendrix 69kV Feeder
What is reliability? For this Utility it is no service interruption in spite of a 14" maple tree crashing down on a 69kV feeder about mid-span. As designed, the tight configuration and high strength messenger kept this circuit performing. And that not only saves money, it keeps ratepayers happy.
